Do you feel like you have the best intentions but somehow always end up getting off track when you travel?
Does it seem like you’re able to stick to your healthy habits before your trip, but inevitably return feeling like you’ve taken two steps back?
Maybe you drank a little more than usual, and of course, you had to try the local cuisine. Plus, who has time to work out when they travel anyway?
I spent many years traveling for work as a consultant, and I know firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the often chaotic and demanding world of business travel. With over a decade of experience in the high-demand field of public accounting, I’ve felt the pressures and daily stress that come with being a client-serving professional.
One of the most common challenges I hear from busy professionals is maintaining healthy habits while on the go. Many feel that traveling disrupts their daily health and wellness routines, leading to frustration and setbacks. I get it!
Traveling, especially for work, presents unique obstacles to maintaining a healthy lifestyle:
- Disruption of Routine: Keeping up with healthy habits in new environments can be challenging.
- Work Commitments: Balancing work, especially during busy seasons, can leave little time for self-care.
- New Food Choices: Eating on the go can lead to limited, and sometimes unhealthy, options.
- Unpredictability: Delays, holidays, and group decisions can derail our best intentions.
These factors can lead to dehydration, constipation, stress, weight gain, and a host of other issues such as lost motivation, lack of sleep, and feeling guilty when we indulge in unhealthy foods or skip workouts.
Often, we find ourselves justifying our choices with thoughts like:
- “It’s just this one time.”
- “I’ve earned it.”
- “I have a really busy, back-to-back schedule.”
- “I’ll get back to my routine after this trip.”
But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if we could travel without having to compromise our health? What if you could enjoy your time away without the burden of health setbacks?
The most important question we need to ask ourselves is: Is it really necessary to focus on healthy habits when we’re on the go? And the answer is – yes! Ignoring healthy habits can have serious consequences, especially for busy professionals under significant stress. In demanding careers, prioritizing our health is not just an option – it’s a necessity.
